2011 Smackdown

89 people and 33 volunteers made this year’s Weed Smackdown a great success!  13 teams pulled 3,240 pounds of weeds in 1.5 hours!

Several returning teams commented that it was great to be able to see that their efforts in 2010 made a difference!  The Fairbanks Rollergirls were very happy to see smaller White Sweet Clover plants in their area and fewer Foxtail Barley plants than in 2010!

Quotes from 2010 participants:

“The food was really good.  I liked learning which plants were weeds not from Alaska.  I liked that pulling weeds in this one little spot helps keep Alaska weed free”   Athena, Girl Scout Troop 87 member

“The Smackdown was a great community service opportunity for our troop that provided an immediate sense of accomplishment and giving as well.  The Smackdown inspired a weed pulling themed 8th birthday party hosted by Shannon (Troop 87), where party guests pulled vetch at Musher’s Hall.  Wherever the Troop goes, the girls that participated in the Smackdown are always pulling vetch, foxtail barley and white sweet clover and teaching their fellow troop members and friends about invasive plants.  It is really cool.  Totally fun and worthwile for the Troop. We plan on being back for the Smackdown in 2011.”  Jessica, Troop 87 co-leader
